A LIMITED NUMBER OF COPIES SIGNED BY BILL ANDERSON AND JACK DAVIDSON ARE AVAILABLE TO BUY FROM THIS SITE - AS LONG AS THIS NOTICE APPEARS
Bill Anderson MBE and member of Scottish Sports ‘Hall of Fame’ is without doubt one of Scotland’s greatest ever sportsmen. The ‘King of the Heavies’, as sports page headlines often dubbed him during an honour-laden thirty year career, was a well merited title. His name became synonymous with caber tossing and hammer throwing as he dominated the world of heavy events, amassing eighteen Scottish championship titles as well as British, European, American, Canadian and World prizes.
Highland Games are one of the most emblematic of Scottish institutions. The Games’ origins can be traced back centuries to when chieftains summoned their clansmen to gatherings which took various forms but which usually included contests in archery, running, wrestling, putting the stone and tossing the caber – the forerunners of the modern games. They are a major tourist attraction in Scotland with over one hundred taking place between the end of May and middle of September each year.
Highland Fling is the story of Bill Anderson’s illustrious career from farm boy to World Champion. It is told in the context of the history of Highland Games in the modern era.
Jack Davidson is a lifelong Highland Games enthusiast and a keen observer of their history, traditions and personalities. He is a former competitor in both light and heavy events, and although he achieved some success, in competing against Bill Anderson several times he never got the better of him. He is a practising Queen’s Counsel and part-time Sheriff.
